When you visit Lofoten it is all but compulsory to get out to sea and try your luck fishing. Fisheries have been the central feature of Lofoten’s history, and have in many ways contributed to building our country. The rich seasonal Lofoten fisheries, Lofotfisket, where the skrei comes from the Barents Sea to Lofoten to spawn, have taken place for hundreds of years. Lofotfisket has provided Norwegians with essential protein rich meals at least since the Viking era. Even today Lofotfisket remains important for us, and we wish to welcome you to a four-hour traditional fishing trip at the Lofoten sea with our experienced professional fishing crew.
Fishing in Lofoten varies greatly with the season, and during the traditional Lofotfisket, from end of February to mid-April, we catch skrei. Our winter fishing includes sea fishing with line wheel and/or sea fishing rod, and we offer coffee on board our authentic fishing cutter.

MS Symra is a traditional fishing cutter, and she turns 100 years old in 2017. She is protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Symra is a comfortable boat originally built specifically for Lofotfisket, and she is certified for 38 passengers.
What will you experience?
You are invited to our main office at the pier in Svolvær port, and will be welcomed by your hosts and crew. Our crew are professional fishermen and know these seas like their own back pocket. They provide all the information you need about what you can expect from your day out, safety on board, and they will teach you how to use the fishing tools and equipment featured on board. We then sail out of Svolvær, past the Fisherman’s Wife statue, and head out to the fishing banks we know from experience can provide a good catch, with location varying depending on the season. There are 10 fishing stations on board, so our guests must expect to share these between them on the trip. But do not worry, we expect you will be very satisfied by the time we head back to port. And the catch? We teach you to fillet it on board, and of course you can take it home with you if you wish. We also offer vacuum packing if you don’t anticipate to consume the fish during your stay in Lofoten.
The fishing trip takes about four hours, weather depending. We do our utmost to secure a trip for all our guests. In case the weather makes it difficult to arrange the trip, we always offer a good alternative, or you are offered a different date for your trip. Our goal is to give you the experience you came for!
Main season for Lofotfisket: ca. 25 February to 15 April
The skrei does not arrive by time table, so we do not know in advance exactly when the skrei schools glide into Vestfjorden each year, but the likelihood of catching skrei during this time is high.
Fishing trips in this period are arranged on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 08:00-12:00. Price: NOK 950 per person.
Other timings and group outings can be arranged on request.
Who is this trip suitable for?
We have made this trip suitable for those who have little or no fishing experience, but who would like to try fishing during the seasonal fishery’s winter conditions. You will receive professional guidance by our crew during the trip, and experience a taste of how Lofotfisket takes place through stories and anecdotes accompanying the activities on board.
What should you bring and wear?
The weather at sea in Lofoten can change rapidly, which is some of the charm of these isles. Fishermen have over hundreds of years learnt what is suitable clothing at sea, and we recommend the same for our guests. Please wear:
